"It Was Like That When I Found It..."

 "Someone -- maybe that smart guy in the 1920s, Picasso, maybe not -- said the best art in Paris is on the walls. He didn't mean the walls of galleries. He meant the walls where the weather could do its work, soaking and drying out, or where deranged or raving amateur critics could take their car keys or ink markers to the images, thinking they were destroying the works but, in reality, adding a democratic layer to the picture. The thought that someone else's substrate is recycled is refreshing. A couple of years ago I hired someone to poster the downtown with 8x10s of some of my images. They were glued to walls near OCAD-U, Graffiti Alley, along College Street where my studio was, in Kensington Market. There was no artist name, no title, no gallery designation. Just the picture awaiting passing eyes before the elements did their thing. Or after. My images in this show are "found", as if they were ever lost." Lee Lamothe, 2021
